WBA initiatives

WBA is the leading organization driving the adoption of wireless broadband and promoting the next generation Wi-Fi experience. Evolving best practice, technical specifications and industry guidelines, it’s also a catalyst for change and development. Our initiatives encompass many aspects of Wi-Fi enhancement and development, including research, technical trials, industry collaboration and more. Four WBA initiatives in particular are leading the way to a better Wi-Fi future.

Our Next Generation Hotspots (NGH) trials aim to make the Wi-Fi user experience as easy and secure as a cellular experience. The NGH trials take the established hotspot model and builds new levels of ease of discovery, security of connection and efficiency of service.

The Global Wi-Fi Roaming initiative comprises a standards and best practices-based roaming framework that enables operators to implement and develop their roaming business.

The Interoperability Compliancy Program will be a major step towards seamless Wi-Fi roaming setting the scene for state of the art WiFi networks.

Our Industry Engagement program underpins and amplifies our hotspot and roaming initiatives. WBA operates as a catalyst within the industry, promoting Wi-Fi offload and Wi-Fi roaming to leading influencers. We have an active engagement program targeting relevant wireless broadband forums with the aim of supporting harmonized technical development across the industry. Partners include the GSMA, the Wi-Fi Alliance, CableLabs, Small Cells Forum and others.

Together with our members, industry partners and other industry forums, we are continually working towards seamless Wi-Fi connectivity and interoperability. The work changes and evolves but the focus is always the same: enabling seamless, secure Wi-Fi roaming and data offload for operators and driving next generation Wi-Fi experience for users as well as creating new services.
