Wi-Fi is enabling 68 per cent of all mobile video views, according to new research.

A new survey from Strategy Analytics reveals that wireless mobile internet connections found in cafés, restaurants, shopping malls, sports centres and other popular locations are powering the vast majority of requests for streaming video.

In fact, according to figures cited by iptv-news.com, Wi-Fi is three times more likely to power mobile video consumption than a standard mobile network – which facilitates just 28 per cent of requests.

Strategy Analytics surveyed over 3,000 mobile users across six different countries to find the proportion of people streaming video via 3G and 4G peaking in France and the US, but only to levels of 33 per cent and 30 per cent respectively.  

This could be attributed to a range of factors, although the cost involved in streaming video via 3G or 4G as opposed to free Wi-Fi may be causing people to look out for public connections before accessing their clips.

Other readings from the study show that 72 per cent of mobile users currently access video content via their devices and 42 per cent would access more if only their screens were larger, reports techcrunch.com.

Some 35 per cent say a lack of quality is restricting their consumption of online video, with just 29 per cent saying a 4G connection would lead them to accessing more clips.
